Ana Veciana-Suarez

Ana Veciana-Suarez is a syndicated columnist for The Miami Herald. Her writing explores the human experience, touching on family and personal issues as well as events that are shaping our country. Her Cuban heritage informs her writing with vibrancy and color and her revelations ring universally true with readers.

Veciana-Suarez's novel, "The Chin Kiss King" (Farrar Straus & Giroux, 1997; in paperback by Plume, 1998), has been translated into Spanish, Dutch and German, and it was recently nominated for the prestigious IMPAC award. The book has been called "piquant and aromatic, written with a spirited sense of inner worlds and human foibles...an impressive debut" (The New York Times) and "Vivid and emotionally charged...bewitching for its lyricism and for its evocative powers" (The Boston Globe).

Veciana-Suarez's latest book, a collection of essays titled "Birthday Parties in Heaven: Thoughts on Life, Love, Grief, and Other Matters of the Heart," was published in 2000 by Dutton/Plume.

Veciana-Suarez's numerous awards for her newspaper writing include a second place Sunshine State Award for commentary in 1998 and a first place Sunshine State Award in 1995, both from the Society of Professional Journalists, South Florida Chapter; first place, Excellence in Feature Writing, commentary category, from the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors in 1996; the Penney-Missouri Award for a co-written 1995 series on caring for the elderly; second place, National Headliner Award for local columns in 1995; and third place, Division A column, Florida Society of Newspaper Editors in 1995.

A summa cum laude graduate of the University of South Florida, Veciana-Suarez previously worked at The Miami News and The Palm Beach Pos.
