Dan Wasserman
Dan Wasserman is one of America's most refreshing editorial cartoonists. His visual skits – sharp, sly, humorous and memorable, choreographed in one to six frames – show no mercy.
The Wasserman voice and striking style stem from his interest in the vocabulary of politics, politicians and public figures. "The English language," he notes, "is usually one of the first casualties of misguided policies. When the characters in my drawings speak, I try to give them a more accurate teleprompter to read from."
He approaches most issues from the left, but doesn't hesitate to go after the liberals when he thinks they're confused or cowardly. His cartoons, distributed by Tribune Media Services three or four times a week, appear in such newspapers as The Washington Post, The International Herald Tribune and The Los Angeles Times and are widely reprinted in papers and newsweeklies around the world, including Time, Newsweek, the Economist and The New York Times' Sunday "Week in Review."
In 1984, Wasserman was a finalist for the H.L. Mencken Human Rights Award for cartooning. He was awarded the 1991 George Washington Medal of Honor for Public Communications by the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge and received the 1991 Standing O Award from the Massachusetts Human Services Coalition.
He is the author of "We've Been Framed!" (Faber & Faber, 1987), a collection of his cartoons covering President Reagan's two terms in office, and "Paper Cuts" (Ivan R. Dee, 1995), a selection of work from the early '90s.
Wasserman, who drew for The Washington Star and The Boston Globe, is a native of New Haven, Connecticut. While attending Swarthmore College he began writing and drawing for campus publications, then went on to study at the Art Students League in New York while teaching college-level English.
