Omar Sharif
Omar Sharif, though perhaps better known for his performances in film, is no stranger to the championship bridge scene. He has won many international events and is a familiar figure at world bridge championships, where he serves as chief commentator of the World Bridge Federation.
In 1967, he gathered some of the world's great players around him in the "Omar Sharif Bridge Circus" and for two years the circus toured several continents matching their skill against local champions. In 1970, he played in perhaps the highest stake bridge match ever when he and his partners were challenged by Britain's top-rated pair in a match of 80 rubbers. Sharif won the match by 5,470 points, but was still out of pocket because he picked up the tab for the expenses of the match.
Sharif shares the byline of the "Goren Bridge" column with writer Tannah Hirsch.
