Ralph Dunagin and Dana Summers
Ralph Dunagin and Dana Summers have a lot in common. Both are established editorial cartoonists for The Orlando Sentinel. They are co-creators of the syndicated comic strip "The Middletons." And they both are nationally prominent cartoonists in their own right. Their joint effort, "The Middletons," features the archetypical suburban family and the next-door neighbors, The Wades. Morris and Midge Middleton live with their "twentysomething" daughter and Morris' mom. Ernest and Peg Wade head an upwardly mobile African-American family climbing the ladder of success. The cast of characters pokes gentle fun at intergenerational and interracial issues and the realities of middle class America.
Dunagin also produces the comic panel "Dunagin's People," syndicated since 1969, and writes the panel "Grin and Bear It." Born and raised in Hattiesburg, Miss., Dunagin majored in commercial art at the University of Southern Mississippi. In 1961, he moved to Florida and joined The Orlando Sentinel. Ralph and his wife, Karlene, live in the Orlando, Fla. area. He has two daughters.
Summers also creates the syndicated comic strip "Bound and Gagged." Before joining The Sentinel in 1982, Summers enjoyed success as a political cartoonist with the Dayton (Ohio) Journal Herald, with prior stints at the Fayetteville (N.C.) Times and as a freelancer for newspapers in Massachusetts. Summers is a 1971 graduate of the Art Institute in Boston. He has won awards from the Overseas Press Club and the Sigma Delta Chi Society of Professional Journalists. Born in Lawrence, Mass., Summers currently resides in Orlando, Fla. with his wife, Mary Jane, and three children.
