Steve Watkins
Steve Watkins creates the comic strip "Housebroken" for Tribune Media Services. He offers readers a humorous take on growing up in a culturally charged world.
"Housebroken" is about a middle-class black family that takes in a down-on-his-luck, ex-rap star dog. Although flat broke, DJ Dog struggles to maintain some semblance of the lifestyle he enjoyed when he was a multimillionaire rapper, which is a challenge now that he lives with a family and two precocious kids in suburbia. "Housebroken" reveals what happens when two lifestyles – the hip-hop and the suburban – clash under one roof.
While a student at Yale University Law School, Watkins' thoughts were constantly filled with comic strip characters based on his friends and family. His law school notebooks were the canvas for doodling that later became "Housebroken." His first strip, "Stuff Happens," was created for the Howard University school newspaper.
Watkins currently leads a double life as both a lawyer and a cartoonist in Los Angeles.
