Bin Laden Is Dead! Long Live Airport Security Checks!
So Osama bin Laden's dead. Now what? Things are going to change, but not in the way you might think.
First off, the rest of the world isn't going to fall over itself about this. Americans might be concerned about the collective yawn coming from Europe, but they really shouldn't read too much into it. Europe just has a better historical perspective on these things. European leaders have been fighting Islamic aggression for nearly a thousand years--starting with the Crusades, when various European leaders set about reclaiming all the land Prophet Muhammad had taken by bloodshed. So when French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel both say that Binny-in-a-box is indeed good news but the fight against international terrorism is ongoing, they're just stating fact rather than underplaying it.
America Needs to Exploit Social Unrest Abroad for Economic Opportunity
It may be callous to ask what economic opportunities exist for America in the wake of all the social unrest and overthrowing of various autocratic governments in the Arab world, but it's something that needs to be considered.
Not long ago, America led the charge to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq, and antiwar leftists were able to gain traction by complaining, as they dusted the dirt off their homegrown organic carrots, that "Bush did it for oil," as though that's a bad thing in itself. If America and other countries are playing a part in regime change now, they'd better be doing it transparently for oil and other financial reasons, if only because they aren't in a position to pass up such opportunities in a downturn economy.
France's Immigration Lessons for America
Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer may not know it, but she has a soul mate in her efforts to control her state's immigration problems in light of federal government inaction. Like Brewer, French President Nicolas Sarkozy is struggling with a legislative straitjacket imposed by a higher level of government--in his case, the European Union. If Brewer has been attacked, Sarkozy has arguably seen far worse. The lesson? Stay the course.
Take one of the hallmarks of French summer, for example: Each year, Eastern European gypsies, also known as Roma gypsies, take advantage of the favorable weather to move to France, setting up ramshackle campsites wherever they see fit--sometimes even along the Seine River. Normally, immigrants from the newest EU member-states like Romania and Bulgaria moving to the more established ones for longer than three months require proof of income or a work permit. But apparently these folks feel they're exempt from all that because they own a camper or a tent.
