The SAVINGS GAME

WOMEN FACE MOST FINANCIAL RISK IN RETIREMENT
Our most useful financial document – and most reassuring to my wife, Georgina, and me in our semiretirement – is a spreadsheet of our predictable income.
Besides the interest from fixed-income investments, I included my pension, our projected Social Security benefits and lifetime payments from three income annuities, everything deposited directly into our checking account.

CAREERS NOW

NO LAZY DAYS IN FINDING THE JOB YOU WANT
By Joyce Lain Kennedy
Tribune Media Services
DEAR JOYCE: I’m not new to the job search grind, but the older I get, the worse I seem to do at it. Do you have advice for me at 48? — L.G.O.
Cutting to the chase on your question, I quote a Web site’s excellent job tips from one of America’s most prolific placement executives, Tony Beshara (tonybeshara.com). Beshara has more trench experience than anyone I know — he’s placed 7,000 people in jobs during his 30-year career. Beshara is blunt. He says that anyone who claims that job search is easy and not to sweat it is dead wrong and trying to peddle silly ideas. I agree. Finding a job is hard work, and the challenge won’t be met with halfhearted efforts.

KIPLINGER’S MONEY POWER

SAVING & INVESTING: THREE INVESTMENTS FOR $1,000 OR LESS
By Thomas M. Anderson, Jeffrey R. Kosnett and Andrew Tanzer
© 2008 Kiplinger’s Personal Finance
For a grand, you can invest in the entire U.S. stock market, the total domestic bond market or a large swath of the world’s markets. How so? Buy an exchange-traded fund from Vanguard that mimics the performance of the index it follows.
Regular Vanguard index funds require a $3,000 initial investment. But you can invest in a Vanguard ETF for the cost of one share, or less than $100. Plus, Vanguard ETFs have lower expenses than the regular index funds.

MAYO CLINIC MEDICAL EDGE

SAVE THOUSANDS ON YOUR MEDICAL BILLS
By Gary Schwartz, M.D.
Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research
DEAR MAYO CLINIC: Are there blood pressure medications available that don’t have troubling side effects?
ANSWER: All medications used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) can cause side effects. But because many different drugs are available for this condition, a doctor usually can find one that both lowers blood pressure and results in minimal side effects.

SUCCESSFUL INVESTING

INTERNATIONAL FUNDS DOWN BUT NOT OUT
By Andrew Leckey
Tribune Media Services
London-based portfolio manager Barnaby Wiener is having a terrific year.
His international fund is down 10 percent.
Maybe that doesn’t sound so great to you, but his results exceed nine out of 10 foreign large-cap value funds in 2008. Many of those funds, once considered bastions of opportunity whenever the U.S. market exhibited weakness, have really tanked.

RETIRE SMART

ENCORE CAREER SEEKERS SEE OPPORTUNITY IN FEDERAL JOBS
By Mark Miller
Tribune Media Services

Uncle Sam wanted Ann Vande Vanter—and he might want you, too if you’re over age 50.
After a 30-year career as an accountant in the private sector, Vande Vanter was hungry for a change. She had worked for several big global audit firms and corporations; the hours were long but the pay was good and she enjoyed the intellectual challenges of dealing with complex tax laws in the U.S. and other countries.

INTERPERSONAL EDGE

WHAT IS WORKPLACE MATURITY?
By Kimberly Mickenburg

By Dr. Daneen Skube
Tribune Media Services
Q: I value maturity in others but often notice I’m the one who’s immature in the workplace. I try to not get upset, but sooner or later I get annoyed, offended or nervous then I act like I’m five. How do I get beyond acting immature?
A: It’s been said that if you can keep your head while all around you are losing theirs, then you clearly don’t know what’s going on. The truth is most of us can’t help feeling immature reactions frequently. What’s important is having the ability to not impulsively act out these feelings.
